What is the water temperature and average depth of the divesites?
The water ranges from 84 degrees in the summer months to 78 in the winter months. Most divers are comfortable in a 3mm full wetsuit. Newer divers often get away with a shorty. Most of us as guides dive 5mm full suits! The average depth of our reefs ranges from 20 to 30 feet down to 200 to 300 feet with a gradual sloping drop off. We find the best diving between a max of 80 feet to the top of the reef at 30 feet. 60 to 70 feet is perfect with tons of life!
Are the dives guided and is there a divemaster in the water on all dives?
The answer is yes! We always have a captain that stays onboard the boat as well as a dive guide in the water on ALL dives!
We offer our divers the option of following one of our experienced guides for safety as well as better marine life viewing or exploring on their own in buddy pairs.
Will we have 24 hour access to tanks and our dive gear for after hours diving?
The answer is yes! You will be given the combination to the gear storage room when you check in with us. We will ensure that there are full tanks at all times so
that you can enjoy our great shore diving 24 hours a day 7 days a week!
How long are the boat rides and how many people should we expect on the boats?
Most of our sites are less than a 20 minute boat ride! It depends also on the seas and which boat we take. Day tripper, our fast boat can make it to “Mushroom Forest” in about 10 minutes! We are not your typical cattle boat Caribbean operation. Our 44 foot boat is rated for 24 divers! She is extremely wide with a beam of 16 feet and with 20 divers she is not crowded at all. Really!!!! Our 31 foot boat is rated for 14 divers but we only take 10 divers on her! Please have a look at our dive boat page for pictures of both our boats.
Do we offer EAN/NITROX fills?
YES! Sunset divers can fill EANx up to 40%. Weekly package rates are available on fills. We can also fill rebreather o2 source bottles with 100% O2 provided the diver brings the necessary fill adaptors. Nitrox courses are also available.
Can we complete our Open Water Diving portion of our certification class with Sunset Divers?
Yes, we would love to have you! Our instructors are some of the best in the business! Just remember to bring your referral kit from your original instructor/dive center and schedule your dives with us in advance. For pricing information please see our Dive Rate page.
Do we offer E-6 or film processing?
No. Unfortunately the chemistry needed for E-6 processing is very expensive and susceptible to heat damage. Our prices would be cost prohibitive. However, we have a hotel shuttle that runs daily and we are able to drop film in town for processing. This can usually be done same day but remember, we are on island time and 1 hour photo should be called afternoon photo here on island.
If I bring or rent a digital camera can you download images for me or should I bring my laptop?
We are all into digital photo here. No need to bring your laptop. Just make sure that you bring your driver disc as well as your USB download cable and we can set you up with a file on our computer. At the end of the week, we can burn you a CD of your images for a nominal fee. We run PC’s here and have no access to MAC drivers.
Do we have emergency oxygen on board our boats?
DEFINATLY YES! We have a DAN approved o2 kit on board both boats at all times. We also have a third o2 kit dedicated to the shop for shore diving use only. The location of all three units is part of our standard briefing.
Do we have marine radio and cell phones on board our boats?
YES!
Both boats are equipped with marine radios and we have a marine radio base station at the shop. We also have good cell phone coverage on most of our sites and all captains carry a cell phone at all times while on board.
